Establishing the first DNA barcode reference library for freshwater decapod species (Crustacea: Decapoda) in Republic of North Macedonia

چکیده

The freshwater ecosystems in the Republic of North Macedonia are considered as biodiversity hotspot on European level since they provide diverse habitats that correspond with complex ecological preferences many species require. This specially applies to crustaceans that, unfortunately, have never been focus a continuous research. In R. Macedonia, usually inhabit exposed negative anthropogenic impact. Thus, some may become extinct presenting an irreversible loss for Macedonian natural heritage. Although DNA barcoding, highly effective tool fast detection, is already routine protocol taxonomical studies all over world, there still no official national barcoding initiative Macedonia. study employs based ca. 650-bp long standard fragment mt COI gene Astacus astacus , Austropotamobius torrentium Potamon fluviatile and ibericum previously identified morphological characters, collected from different parts ability rapidly identify has proven. Our research presents first comprehensive molecular decapod taxonomy giving attempt establish barcode reference library country. We hope further application this approach will lead construction aquatic biota Such find purpose modern bioassessment protocols well phylogenetic detecting interpopulation genetic variability.

First DNA Barcode Reference Library for the Identification of South American Freshwater Fish from the Lower Paraná River

Valid fish species identification is essential for biodiversity conservation and fisheries management. Here, we provide a sequence reference library based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I for a valid identification of 79 freshwater fish species from the Lower Paraná River. Neighbour-joining analysis based on K2P genetic distances formed non-overlapping clusters for almost all spe...

Insular species of Afrotropical freshwater crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Potamonautidae and Potamidae) with special reference to Madagascar and the Seychelles

The evolutionary relationships between island and mainland faunas of the 24 species of insular freshwater crabs in the Afrotropical region are reviewed in the light of phylogenetic studies. Twenty insular species of freshwater crabs are endemic, and four are also found on the neighboring mainland of Africa. The Atlantic Ocean islands of Sherbro, Bioko, Príncipe, and São Tomé support five specie...

The Application of DNA Barcodes for the Identification of Marine Crustaceans from the North Sea and Adjacent Regions

During the last years DNA barcoding has become a popular method of choice for molecular specimen identification. Here we present a comprehensive DNA barcode library of various crustacean taxa found in the North Sea, one of the most extensively studied marine regions of the world. Our data set includes 1,332 barcodes covering 205 species, including taxa of the Amphipoda, Copepoda, Decapoda, Isop...

Improved protocols to accelerate the assembly of DNA barcode reference libraries for freshwater zooplankton

Currently, freshwater zooplankton sampling and identification methodologies have remained virtually unchanged since they were first established in the beginning of the XX century. One major contributing factor to this slow progress is the limited success of modern genetic methodologies, such as DNA barcoding, in several of the main groups. This study demonstrates improved protocols which enable...

Periclimenaeus species (Crustacea: Decapoda: Pontoniinae) from Hawaii.

Two specimens of an undescribed species of pontoniine shrimp of the genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile 1915 from Maui Island, Hawaiian Islands, are described and illustrated, raising to three the number of species known from the Hawaiian Islands. The new species is remarkable for the greatly reduced molar process and sharp lateral cutting edge on the major second pereiopod dactyl and most closely ...
